VoIP and IM both present challenges to the current 9-1-1 system due to the differences in technology. The wire-line 9-1-1 system was never designed to accommodate Internet communications. While efforts are underway to address this problem, no clear-cut, let alone universal, solution is yet deployed.

Using IM, a citizen in an emergency - who may not be able to speak for fear of attracting attention - can "text message" your 9-1-1 Call Center. A two-way text connection is established via RescueNet®. The IM "caller's" location can thus be established and help dispatched. GenDesign is working on incorporating Global Positioning Systems (GPS) capabilities that are native to some consumer devices to further enhance IM via RescueNet®.
